In 2002 the Ducati 916 series reached the pinacle of its development in the ultimate road going 916: the 998R. This was as near to a racing bike as you are likely to get. The 998R's engine is radically different to the rest of the 998 range (all of which is stunning).

The 998's engine feels like it deserves to be out on the race track. The 998 is only 3bhp down on the 1098, which is nothing short of amazing.
